About the Garbage Sorting App “さんあ～る”
“さんあ～る” is an app for local governments that lets you check garbage sorting rules and collection days for the district where you live.
It has been introduced by municipalities across Japan, making it easy to check how to dispose of garbage and when collection days are in each area right from your smartphone. Now it has been introduced in Nishinomiya City too.
In addition to collection days, it also has these useful features.
- Check collection days at a glance with the calendar view!
- Notifications to help prevent missed garbage days!
- Easily search how to sort specific types of garbage!
- Learn while having fun with garbage quizzes!
How to Install “さんあ～る”
I wondered what it was like, so I went ahead and installed it.
Download さんあ～る from the QR code here or from the app store, then select “New Registration.”
Choose Nishinomiya City → select your district, then tap your town name.
Check that the town name is correct, then tap OK.
Once Re-Cycle-kun appears, setup is complete! Easy～😊
Trying Out “さんあ～る”
Now, let’s give it a try.
The top of the home screen shows the next garbage collection, and the lower section shows this week’s collection schedule.
Tap the three-line icon in the top right of the screen to open the menu.
The calendar, notices from the city, FAQs, and more are simple and easy to read!
I’ll introduce two features that seem especially handy.
Sorting Guide
“How am I supposed to throw this away?” We’ve all wondered that before, right?
This is perfect for those moments! It tells you how to dispose of the item you want to throw away. All you have to do is tap the name of the item, so it’s easy!
“American football protective gear” is “bulky garbage.”If it fits in a designated bag, it’s“other non-burnable garbage”!
Super easy to understand! Anyone looking to throw one away?
Quiz
You get five quiz questions related to garbage. There are explanations too, so you can learn about garbage and the environment while having fun.
It even shows your accuracy rate and consecutive correct answers!

Final Thoughts
The garbage sorting app “さんあ～る” lets you quickly check what to do when you’re unsure, which is great because it can take a bit of the stress out of taking out the trash! It doesn’t just tell you garbage days and disposal methods; you can also pick up all kinds of useful knowledge, so it might be nice to try using it together with your kids.
