- 2万円7.5%(24票)
- 4万円78.3%(252票)
- 10万円5.6%(18票)

Here’s an experiment.
If you win at rock-paper-scissors, you get 100,000 yen.
If you lose, you have to pay 100,000 yen.

- 絶対しない62.9%(129票)

Apparently, most people wouldn’t play rock-paper-scissors.
Getting 100,000 yen would be great, but apparently the shock of losing 100,000 yen feels twice as big. This is a well-known idea in behavioral economics, a field that studies how people make judgments and choices.
And unfortunately, the answer is not 100,000 yen.
The correct answer is c. 40,000 yen.
The source is The fixed-amount tax reduction is starting! | Government Public Relations Online.
Starting in June 2024, a tax reduction of 40,000 yen per person will begin, combining both “income tax” and “resident tax.”
On top of that, if you have dependent relatives, the amount for them is added as well.
For example, if there is the taxpayer and three dependent relatives, the 40,000-yen reduction applies per person, so the total tax reduction would apparently be 160,000 yen. That’s quite a lot.
Dependent relatives are underage children or relatives who cannot support themselves financially, such as part-time workers or casual workers whose salary income does not exceed 1.03 million yen.
By the way, if your income tax or resident tax amount is low and the full reduction cannot be applied, the shortfall will be paid out to you.
In other words, people with lower annual incomes may be able to receive up to 40,000 yen~.
For accurate information, please check the National Tax Agency’s official website or government announcements~. The details may be a bit difficult, though
