Besides summer festivals, there are all kinds of events in Nishinomiya, but one thing kids often struggle with is their independent research project.
Like our “Nishinomiya Summer Festival Roundup,” we’ll keep adding new finds here as we come across them.
Basically, we’ll cover events that are for elementary school students, include a hands-on experience, and are free or low-cost. Paid events not listed here will be handled as PR ads〜(If you’d like your event listed, click here)

【Free】Traditional Culture Experience Festival for Children (Application: first-come, first-served)

An event where children can try traditional cultural activities such as wearing a Noh mask and practicing the sliding Noh walk, origata paper-folding using washi, short comic storytelling, traditional spinning tops, puppet theater, flower arrangement, and enjoying fragrances.
When is it?
July 28 (Sun), August 18 (Sun), 24 (Sat), and 25 (Sun)

【Paid】Summer Vacation Children’s Group Shrine Experience Learning (Application: first-come, first-served)

An event where children can wear the kimono of a Shinto priest or shrine maiden, greet the deities, practice kagura, and experience a lion dance.
When is it?
July 29 (Mon) and 30 (Tue), 9:00~15:00 both days
Application deadline: First-come, first-served. Deadline is Saturday, July 20.
Fill out the application form available at the shrine office or on the grounds, and submit it with the participation fee (1,000 yen per person) at the shrine office reception.

A fun and educational event where parents and children can do a broccoli DNA extraction experiment and learn about genetically modified foods.
When is it?

How to Apply

Who can join?
- Children from 4th grade of elementary school through 3rd year of junior high school who live in Nishinomiya City, and their guardians
What can you do?
- DNA extraction experiment using broccoli
- DVD screening about genetically modified foods
- Talk by a food sanitation inspector
What to Bring
- Writing utensils
- Drink (tea, etc.)
- Hand towel
- Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
Important Notes
- Photography and video recording inside the facility are generally prohibited (photos of the DNA extraction may be taken)
- Photos from the event and survey responses may be posted on the city website or in printed materials (individual faces and names will not be identifiable)
- Follow staff instructions and do not touch anything other than the experimental tools and designated equipment
- If you are feeling unwell, please refrain from participating and contact the organizers
- Participants are responsible for any injuries or accidents
- Belongings cannot be checked in or stored
- The workshop may be canceled due to weather or natural disasters
