Apparently, an old folk house cafe called “つむつむ,” with a thatched roof, opened in Yamaguchicho Funasaka on September 8, 2019.
(This information was provided by a reader. Thank you!)
According to the reader, the owners renovated their 200-year-old home into a cafe, creating a very relaxing space where old and new elements blend beautifully.
Just having a thatched roof makes it pretty rare!
We visited during lunchtime right away and tried the lunch menu.

The Hamburg Steak Lunch at “つむつむ”
The main dish of the day was everyone’s favorite: “hamburg steak”
The main hamburg steak comes with 3 small side dishes, miso soup, and rice for 1,200 yen
The potato miso soup was comforting, and there were plenty of vegetables, plus hijiki and sweet potato.
It’s such a well-balanced lunch menu!
They are particular about homemade items and ingredients from Hyogo Prefecture, and the vegetables are crisp and fresh!
It has that handmade warmth that makes you feel so cozy.

Actually, I had drunk too much the night before and was hungover, so the warm miso soup made me incredibly happy.
The atmosphere inside the cafe was slow and relaxed, and the service was very polite and pleasant.
I was able to enjoy my meal at a leisurely pace.
The Lunch Menu at “つむつむ”

There are Lunch A, B, and C options, and the meal itself is the same for all of them.
Lunch A 1,800 yen (meal + drink + dessert)
Lunch B 1,600 yen (meal + drink)
Lunch C 1,200 yen (meal only)
It looks like tea time would be fun too, with cake sets and assorted desserts.
Inside “つむつむ”

There are four tables for two and one sofa seat for two.
Counter seating is also available.

The aunt of the owner couple was apparently a tea ceremony teacher, and tea bowls and kettles used for boiling water for tea are displayed inside the cafe.

So lovely.

They also sell vegetables.

Terrace seating
Just imagining having a terrace like this at home is exciting♪

Did the cozy atmosphere come across?
The Exterior of “つむつむ”

A “thatched roof,” which is rare nowadays.
You can really feel the history.
Apparently, there are fewer thatching craftsmen these days, and the maintenance costs are quite high.

The building is designated by Nishinomiya City as an “Urban Landscape Formation Building.”
That’s kind of amazing!
I don’t really know the details, but isn’t it pretty impressive for someone’s home to be designated as an Urban Landscape Formation Building?
Other Urban Landscape Formation Buildings in Nishinomiya City apparently include the Clock Tower at Kwansei Gakuin University, the Third School Building at Mukogawa Gakuin,
and the Catholic church near Nishi2.
How to Get to “つむつむ”

By the way, to get to “つむつむ,” you have to go down a narrow road like this.
If a car comes from the opposite direction, it’s the kind of narrow road where your spirit of giving way will be tested.
There were people working up ahead on the left, and maybe because I was distracted by them,
I accidentally drove right past “つむつむ” 😅

We entered from in front of Sanno Shrine, but if you’re driving, it seems better to approach from the opposite side.
If you don’t have a car, you can get there smoothly by using the Sakura Yamanami Bus!
If you’re taking the bus, get off at “Funasakabashi.” It’s a 3-minute walk from the Funasakabashi bus stop.
On the day we visited, there were some ladies who had come by Sakura Yamanami Bus.
