What is “Nishinomiya Battery”?

It is a nationally designated historic site located in Nishihatocho, Nishinomiya City. Toward the end of the Edo period, the Edo shogunate, concerned about national defense, planned to build batteries along Osaka Bay, and this one was constructed in 1866 under the direction of Katsu Kaishu. A well and ammunition storage were built inside, but apparently smoke filled the structure during a test firing, so it was never used in actual combat. During the Meiji period, its rooftop was even used as a beer garden.
