Shukugawa is famous for its cherry blossoms, but the hydrangeas are just about to reach full bloom. Nishi2 reader Kyochoman-san went to check them out at top speed〜.

Apparently they’re along the Shukugawa River, just north of Route 2.
The parts everyone thinks are hydrangea flowers are actually called “sepals.” They’re not the flowers.
These little grains are the actual hydrangea flowers. Go ahead and show off with a knowing look, like, “Do you know which part of a hydrangea is the flower?”
You can see lots of hydrangeas〜
Shukugawa is a treasure trove of nature. You can also see huge, graceful birds like herons〜〜
These black ones are “nina-gai” snails, which firefly larvae eat〜. Because these snails are here, you can see fireflies in Shukugawa〜. Be sure to show your kids what’s in the river too〜.
Lastly
The rainy season has started, but hydrangeas are flowers that perk up in the rain, so Shukugawa being enjoyable even on rainy days really feels like a luxury. A week ago there were tons of fireflies, and there’s so much real nature here. It made me realize all over again that Nishinomiya really is amazing.
