Tonight, 10/9, if Haruki Murakami wins the Nobel Prize in Literature, it looks like a banner will be put up at Koroen Elementary School.

Actually, Haruki Murakami was part of the very first graduating class of Koroen Elementary School. Apparently, there are all kinds of stories from his time there. Having a legend like that connected to Nishinomiya is something to be proud of.

A Little Trivia
- At Uchide Park in Ashiya, there used to be a monkey cage, and it even appears in Murakami’s works. A true local-insider reference. Ashitsuu article
- Just to the north is the Uchide Branch of Ashiya City Library, a must-visit related spot for Haruki fans. It’s packed with books too.
- One thing that often comes up in stories about Koroen Elementary is “matsutake udon” served in school lunch. Amazing. Apparently it’s true
The results for the Nobel Prize in Literature are expected to be announced at around 8:00 p.m. on Friday, 10/9 Japan time. *Timing may vary depending on how the local announcement proceeds
