“7-Eleven”: here are the ranking results for what people call it.
Since 7-Eleven is the most common convenience store chain in Nishinomiya, and apparently there are quite a few different ways people refer to it, we looked into what people in Nishinomiya call it.
There were some surprising names too.

Our “What do you call 7-Eleven?” survey received 242 responses! 242 sounds like Nishitsu
So, here’s the ranking of what people in Nishinomiya call 7-Eleven!!

What Do You Call 7-Eleven? Ranking

- 1st: Seven
- 2nd: Sebu-Ire
- 3rd: Seven-Eleven
- 4th: Other (we’ll announce those later!)
- 5th: Bunbun
- 6th: Eleven
By Gender

There’s almost no difference by gender. Men seem slightly more likely to say “Sebu-Ire.”
By Age Group
Next, we looked at whether there were differences by age group.

- The Sebu-Ire group is especially large among people in their 30s, and small among people in their 60s.
- The Seven group is mainly people in their 40s and 50s.
- The Seven-Eleven group is common among people in their 60s.
It’s kind of surprising that so many people in their 30s say Sebu-Ire. The rate of “Seven” being firmly established among people in their 50s is also quite high, so the data showed some clear differences by age.
*Because there were fewer respondents in their 20s, under 20s, and 70s, they are not included here.
“Sebu” Was Surprisingly Common
As you can see from the graph, there were many “Other” answers, and the vast majority of them used the name “Sebu”. In practical terms, this is basically 4th place. I had no idea lol
Sebu
My husband says “Sebu,” so I started saying Sebu too. There weren’t many 7-Elevens in my hometown, so I wasn’t familiar with them, but after I got married and moved to Nishinomiya, I was surprised by how many 7-Elevens there are.

Thoughts on “Sebu”
Maybe people started mishearing “Let’s go to Seven” as “Let’s go to Sebu,” and that led to more people thinking it was “Sebu.” (Nishitsu hypothesis)
Other Unusual Names
There were three responses saying Seburebu. It feels like a slightly different version of Sebu-Ire. It’s a minority, though.
In our family, we call the stores near our house things like “the Seven-chan over there,” “the Seven-chan by the station,” “the Seven-chan in front of the school,” “the Seven-chan to the east,” and “the Seven-chan across the river.” When I’m talking to people outside my family, I say Seven-Eleven.
(Resident age 50-59)
The fact that they switch back to Seven-Eleven outside the family is playful and cute.
There’s a convenience store right next to my home, so just saying “the convenience store” gets the message across.
(Resident age 60-69)
That’s not wrong, so I think it’s fine!
Comments About 7-Eleven
Bunbun
Depending on my mood, I say Sebu-Ire.

Sebu-Ire
Differentiation, integration, good mood.
Man in his 40s (lives elsewhere: outside the city/prefecture)
Seven
I’ve been drinking Seven Coffee as a break for years!

Seven-Eleven
It’s pricier than other convenience stores. But it’s good. Personally, I’d be happier with average taste at a more affordable price.

When I bought one of the more expensive rice balls, I was surprised that it didn’t have any seaweed wrapped around it. Meanwhile, the regular seaweed-wrapped rice balls are mostly seasoned seaweed. I realized that the rice ball I want to eat just isn’t here anymore.

Would it be possible to sell the sunglasses you sold 50 years ago again? We’ve had so many extremely hot days lately, and I’d like Seven-Eleven to sell them. If the sweets are good, then like FamilyMart, maybe you could give a 30 yen discount the next time someone comes in and buys sweets, even if they don’t get a discount on the day they buy them.

Sebu-Ire
I think Sebu-Ire has the best food, so if there isn’t one around, my family just gives up lol

Seven
I live in Chiba Prefecture. I work part-time at Seven.

Seburebu. For my child, Nana.
Seven-Eleven’s bento, rice balls, sandwiches, and more are so good they’re on a completely different level compared with other convenience stores! Above all, the sandwich bread is delicious! The sweets and bread are good too, so I love Seburebu.

Personally, I’ve started calling JR Nishinomiya “J-Nishi.” I’m in the Seven camp, but now I’ve found myself saying Sebu-Ire sometimes too lol
