Expo is almost here! Are you panicking, thinking, “I can’t speak English at all…”?

When a foreign visitor started talking to Shachomi, she froze for a moment. With basically zero English skills, she ended up explaining with gestures and mostly Japanese. That’s Nishinomiya Tsushin web writer @Shachomi(cross-dressed), who has definitely had that kind of experience.

With the Expo coming up, and since Nishinomiya is a sake town, if visitors from overseas come here, I want to be able to tell them “There’s a great restaurant over here!” in English! Because that would be so cool!

With that feeling in my heart, the place I visited this time was… ECC Foreign Language Institute Koshien School!!

It has moved from the familiar McDonald’s building in Koshien to Corowa Koshien right across the way!

What’s this…? They offer counseling and a free trial lesson,

so of course!!

Shachomi went to casually try it out!

Counseling Starts at Reception

First, I headed to the reception desk.

I told the receptionist, “I’m Shachomi, and I booked a trial lesson.”

The person who helped me was School Director Hara.

Welcome to ECC! What kind of goal made you want to start learning English this time?

Actually, a while back, a foreign visitor asked me for directions, and I couldn’t speak at all… I really wanted to share what makes Nishinomiya so great, but I couldn’t.

I see. With the Expo and more inbound tourism coming up, we’ll probably be seeing more visitors from overseas, so that sounds like a big motivation!

By the way, are there any days of the week when you could come after work? Even once a week is fine.

Weekdays are often a bit busy, but I think Friday nights might work… I’m also considering Saturdays and Sundays.

That sounds good. Friday nights and weekends tend to have classes that are easy for working adults to join. First, we’ll do a level check, then recommend the best class for you.

(A level check makes me nervous, but if the teacher is kind, maybe I can do this.) Oh, I was only thinking I wanted to be able to have English conversations, but should I brush up on grammar too? I really can’t do English at all 💦

For beginners, it’s best to build a solid foundation in grammar. Of course, if you want to focus mainly on conversation, lessons with a foreign instructor are great too, but at first, our “grammar with a bilingual instructor + conversation with a foreign instructor” pair-teaching style is the most popular.
