120 years old!
And it has been open in Shukugawa for 80 years:

Show us the shop!
成田家さん, we’re coming in!

Before even entering the shop,
this sign immediately caught our eye!
The “成田家” lettering was written by
Ichikawa Danjuro X, the kabuki actor.

In the old days, it was common to read from right to left,
so the characters “成田家” appear as “家田成.”
During the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake,
the shop collapsed,
but the owner, Mitsuo Oku, searched through the ruins
and finally found this sign.
It really carries a lot of history.
Now then, let’s take a look inside 成田家!

When you open the door,
you’re welcomed by a warm glow.
And over on the wall to the right is…

A program from the Osaka Kabukiza Theater from Meiji 31 is on display.

And this is
the flyer from when 成田家 first opened!
It’s a commemorative flyer from around Showa 13, when the shop opened in Shukugawa.
In the past, the main shop was in Sakurabashi, Osaka,
but today, the only shop is the one near Hankyu Shukugawa Station.

This originally belonged to the main Naritaya shop in Sakurabashi, Osaka.

Near the register, you’ll find items such as:
- Dorayaki
- Anko sweet bean paste
- Fuku-shiruko
They also sell
fig dorayaki.

They’re only available while the figs last,
so once they’re gone, they’re gone!
Be sure to try one.

The sweetness of the fig blends with the chunky anko, and it’s delicious!

And here’s the regular dorayaki.
The dorayaki cake is soft and moist.
It pairs perfectly with the chunky anko!

And
the most popular item at 成田家 is,
without a doubt,
Mimasu Monaka!!

It’s packed full of anko.

The design of the Mimasu Monaka
incorporates the mimasu crest, the official crest of Ichikawa Danjuro.
In February 1898 (Meiji 31),
at the opening performance of the Osaka Kabukiza Theater,
when the ninth Ichikawa Danjuro (Horikoshi Hideshi) appeared on stage, the mimasu crest was used as the emblem,
and monaka sweets, said to be his favorite, were presented to patrons.
They were so well received that after the final performance,
they were released for sale as a commemorative item, incorporating the crest of Osaka City.

In addition to Mimasu Monaka,

there’s a monaka with a plum blossom design.

A monaka with a drum design.

And a monaka with a clam design.
成田家さん is full of adorable Japanese sweets.
They’re perfect with tea!!
Tookashi

On the 10th of every month,
there is a festival called “Toka Mairi” held at Nishinomiya Shrine, the head shrine of Ebisu.
Visitors to this “Toka Mairi”
receive a different Japanese sweet depending on the month.
That sweet is called “Tookashi.”
成田家さん, which participates in the “Nishinomiya Wagashi Brand Promotion Executive Committee,”
also makes a special sweet just for this Toka Mairi.

This is that Japanese sweet.
On March 10, 2019, it will be handed out to worshippers at Nishinomiya Shrine
and also sold at the shop.
A one-day-only Japanese sweet.
It’s definitely something you’ll want to get!
A message from the owner of 成田家

Mitsuo Oku, the representative director of 成田家♪
Owner Mitsuo Oku knows a lot about old Shukugawa,
and he kindly told us about the area’s history with a gentle smile!

Where is it?
The address is 8-8 Hagoromocho, Nishinomiya.
It’s about a 3-minute walk from Hankyu Shukugawa Station.

Exit the ticket gates at Hankyu Shukugawa Station and head left.
Cross the pedestrian crossing,
then turn at the corner by the bakery Little Mermaid Shukugawa…

and you’ll see the 成田家 sign♪

Here it is on the map▼

Rather than a general wagashi shop,
we’re more of a monaka shop,
so we mainly focus on monaka.
