The nationally famous cookie from Michelbach, Cookie Rose.
As the year draws to a close, many of you may be thinking of bringing them as a gift.
(Cookie Rose will not be sold on December 24.)
A lot of you are probably wondering what time people start lining up, right??
So we observed the morning scene at Michelbach for one week.
Here are the results of our observations↓↓
- On weekdays, the number of people increases sharply between 8:30 and 9:00
- The time numbered tickets are handed out varies by day(We never figured out whether it depends on the time or the number of people.)
- It seems safe to assume numbered tickets are handed out sometime between about 8:30 and 9:30
- Even if you are in line when numbered tickets are handed out, there may be times when you do not receive one then
- On holidays, people tend to start lining up a little earlier
- On 2 of the 6 days we observed, when we lined up after the shop opened at 10:00, we were able to buy Cookie Rose without a numbered ticket(We did not check this on all 6 days.)
Here is what we observed each day↓↓
Mornings at Michelbach
Tuesday, December 1

12/1 (Tue.) AM 8:34
- At 8:34, 10 people were in line
- When we passed by again around 9:00, numbered tickets were being handed out
“Are they handed out based on time?”
“Or based on the number of people in line?”
That is what we wanted to know.
Wednesday, December 2

12/2 (Wed.) AM 8:04 / AM 8:31
| Time | Number of People |
|---|---|
| 8:04 | 4 people |
| 8:31 | 9 people |

12/2 (Wed.) AM 9:00
- Just before 9:00, we thought, “Oh, no one’s here,” but people were lined up on the stairs
- It seems numbered tickets were handed out sometime between 8:30 and 9:00
Thursday, December 3
- No one was in line at 7:30

12/3 (Thu.) AM 8:01 / AM 8:29
| Time | Number of People |
|---|---|
| 8:01 | 4 people |
| 8:29 | 13 people |

12/3 (Thu.) AM 8:59 / AM 9:38
- By 9:00, the line reached the stairs
- It seems numbered tickets were handed out sometime between 9:00 and 9:38
Friday, December 4

12/4 (Fri.) AM 8:01 / AM 8:32
| Time | Number of People |
|---|---|
| 8:01 | 1 person |
| 8:32 | 10 people |

12/4 (Fri.) AM 9:01 / AM 10:05
After observing for four days, we started to see that the number of people increases sharply around 9:00.
- Numbered tickets were handed out after 9:00
- After opening at 10:00, both people with numbered tickets and people without them were in line
We remembered someone we knew who had said, “I want Cookie Rose!” so we tried lining up at 10:05 after the shop opened.

Before getting in line, we asked, “Can we buy them without a numbered ticket?”
They said, “If it’s the 18-piece box, up to 2 per person is fine,” so after waiting about five minutes, we were able to buy them with no trouble.
Saturday, December 5

12/5 (Sat.) AM 7:30 / AM 8:02
| Time | Number of People |
|---|---|
| 7:30 | 1 person |
| 8:02 | 13 people |
- The first person in line had apparently been there since 7:10
- At 8:00, which is 30 minutes earlier than on weekdays, 13 people were already in line
Maybe more people really do line up on holidays…

12/5 (Sat.) AM 8:30 / AM 9:19
- By 8:30, the line reached the stairs
- Numbered tickets were handed out sometime between 8:30 and 9:19
Sunday, December 6
This was the final day of observation.

12/6 (Sun.) AM 7:35 / AM 8:03
| Time | Number of People |
|---|---|
| 7:35 | 4 people |
| 8:03 | 6 people |
12/6 (Sun.) AM 8:40 / AM 9:10
- Numbered tickets were handed out sometime between 8:03 and 8:40
- At 8:40, the person who had been 5th in line received a numbered ticket and headed toward the station
- The two people who had been at the end of the line at 8:40 had moved to the front

12/6 (Sun.) AM 10:16
Then, at 10:16 after the shop opened, we asked again.
“Can we buy Cookie Rose without a numbered ticket?” we asked.
“If it’s the 18-piece box, up to 2 per person is fine.”
That was the answer (^o^)/
Summary
After observing the morning scene at Michelbach from Tuesday, December 1 to Sunday, December 6, here is what we more or less found out:
- On weekdays, the number of people increases sharply between 8:30 and 9:00
- The time numbered tickets are handed out varies by day(We never figured out whether it depends on the time or the number of people.)
- It seems safe to assume numbered tickets are handed out sometime between about 8:30 and 9:30
- Even if you are in line when numbered tickets are handed out, there may be times when you do not receive one then
- On holidays, people tend to start lining up a little earlier
- On 2 of the 6 days we observed, if you lined up after the shop opened at 10:00, you could buy Cookie Rose without a numbered ticket(We did not check this on all 6 days.)
Nishi2 has previously written two articles:
We lined up at Michelbach at 8:20 on a weekday morning and were able to buy Cookie Rose after waiting 30 minutes
We were able to buy Michelbach’s elusive “Cookie Rose” without lining up
Both ended with the twist that we were able to buy them without lining up.
This time as well, on both of the 2 days out of 6 when we checked, “Can we buy them without a numbered ticket?”, the result was that we could buy Cookie Rose without a numbered ticket.
Was that simply a matter of sheer luck or not…?
December mornings are cold, so if you plan to line up, please dress warmly and take care not to catch a cold.
