Wright Yogashiten, a cake shop in the Koshienguchi Shopping Street.
It is a long-established shop founded in 1955.
Since the shop is scheduled to take part in both the upcoming “Koshienguchi Bar & Marche” and “Nishinomiya Western Confectionery Garden Party,” we went to visit.
The name of the shop comes from Frank Lloyd Wright, because the founder’s predecessor was the head pastry chef at the former Koshien Hotel, which was built in Wright’s architectural style.

Exterior of “Wright Yogashiten”

The shop is located inside the shopping street, just a short walk from JR Koshienguchi Station.
It is not a very large shop, but there is a sign outside, so it should be easy to spot.
Inside “Wright Yogashiten”

This is the showcase for fresh cakes.

Of course, they also make fresh cream decorated cakes.
Please note that reservations are required.

On top of the showcase, there are also “Kogane Imo” and “warabimochi.”

They also have a great selection of baked sweets.
Their “madeleines” are said to have been presented as an offering to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress.

Both the fresh cakes and baked sweets are classic, traditional items.
This is the one that especially caught my attention↓

This is a cake called “Old Fashioned,” made with buttercream.
Cakes made with buttercream are pretty rare these days, and the piped rose on top has such a nostalgic feel to it.
I used to make these often back when I was a pâtissier, but you hardly see this kind of piping anymore.
“Old fashioned” means something from the past, but this cake gives you a sense of “the good old days” and tradition.
Just from this cake alone, you can tell this is a shop that truly values the traditions of Western-style confectionery.
I also bought a couple of baked sweets to take home.
One was this “madeleine,” said to have been presented as an offering to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress↓

First of all, the package printed with the former Koshien Hotel, now Mukogawa Women’s University, is lovely.
Apparently, it is a valuable photo taken back in those days.
The madeleine has the words “Memories of Koshien Hotel” written on it↓

Here it is.
Can you see it?
I think it would make a nice souvenir, but if anything, it seems like something longtime Nishinomiya residents would especially appreciate.
The other item I found was a “sake sweet” from Nishinomiya, a town known for sake: “sake lees rusk.”
Here it is↓

It is a baked sweet made by spreading “sake lees,” “white miso,” and “butter” on rusk before baking.
When you try it, there is a gentle hint of sake lees flavor…
This also seems like it would make a good Nishinomiya souvenir.
By the way, there is a “Takaramusume” sticker on the package. This is a brand from Osawa Honke Sake Brewery, located near the Nishinomiya coast in Higashimachi.
It is a sake brewery that can make original labels, and I often use them for gifts too.
