From a little farther away, it looks like this. It’s pretty big even compared with the vending machine!I want to line it up next to a 551 pork bun! The shape is definitely the same!
From the side, it looks like this… Rather than looking like it was placed there, it almost looks like it’s growing out of the ground…
It seemed to be on the grounds of JA Hyogo Rokko’s Koto Branch, so I called and asked about it (^o^)／
They said, “We’re not really sure, but it was probably placed there to keep vehicles from cutting too far inside when turning left.”
We don’t know when it was placed there or who put it there, but it seems to be something like an “ikezu-ishi”!
By the way, “ikezu-ishi” refers to a deliberately placed stone on the road that prevents people from passing any farther inside. Apparently, that’s what it’s called in Kyoto dialect.
They’re said to have become common in Kyoto because the streets are narrow, and they help prevent cars from frequently scraping against walls (^o^)／
