“What was your favorite place in Nishinomiya when you were a child?”
Hankyu Nishinomiya Stadium, front view
Nishinomiya Stadium
I was in the Hankyu Braves kids’ club, and my parents often took me there. One day, after watching a day game with my grandmother, I got lost on the way home. Someone connected to the stadium gave me money, and I took the Hankyu train back home.

Children’s park in Tokiwacho
At the time, I lived in Fundo Housing. I usually played within the Fundo Housing grounds, but sometimes I would venture out to the children’s park in Tokiwacho. I remember how exciting and adventurous that felt. On the way there was a street stall for shoe repairs, and it was fun when the man there, or maybe he was a younger guy, would play with us. (It was next to the home of a famous tennis player.)

Tsubameya Model Shop (Hanshin Nishinomiya JUSCO 4F)
I loved model trains as a child and used to ride my bicycle there from the Hirota area. At the time, I think it was probably the only shop in Nishinomiya that handled model trains.

Hankyu Nishinomiya-kitaguchi Station and Nishinomiya Depot
When I was a child, I lived in Amagasaki. Whenever my family went from Sonoda Station on the Kobe Line to Takarazuka Family Land, I looked forward to seeing all the Hankyu trains parked at the Nishinomiya Depot from the train window. If I happened to see the rescue car that felt like the “master” of the depot, I was thrilled. I also loved the famous diamond crossing inside Nishinomiya-kitaguchi Station. I liked hearing the distinctive sound as trains passed over it from the platform, but hearing it from inside the train while riding over it had its own charm too.

Purin-yama Park (Otani-cho)
Whenever I went there with time to spare, someone was always there.

Mukogawa River
I practiced riding a bicycle on the riverbed, played there with friends in junior high, and sometimes thought through my worries alone. Just watching the river keep flowing beside me, as if watching over me, made all kinds of things flow through and out of me too…

The Hankyu Braves training dormitory
When I was in elementary school, I got autographs from Yamada-san and Fukumoto-san, who had just joined the team.

Mukogawa riverbed
I’m a graduate of Kawaragi Elementary School, and when I was a kid, I played on the Mukogawa riverbed whenever I had free time. The area between the Hankyu Railway and Japan National Railways at the time was our home ground. We bought toy-like fishing sets at nearby Funamori Food Store and pretended to fish, though we never caught anything lol. A few boys and girls from class cycled all the way to the river mouth, and my first date in sixth grade was also there, starting at the Mukogawa riverbed and then going to the park next to the Kosei Nenkin Pool. I have nothing but really fun memories. Even now, I pass by Mukogawa every day for work, and every time, those happy memories rush through my mind. I want to go back to those days (tears)

Because I thought they would buy me my favorite bagels, and I liked going for drives in the car.
Female in her 40s
Maehama (Omaehama)
I remember there being a fishing pond? in such a quiet, beautiful place right in the middle of the city. That was also where I first learned how to fish.
Male in his 40s

Kabutoyama
We used to walk there as a family from Uegahara. I remember it felt close once we passed through the forest park.
Male in his 50s
The fishing pond at Koroen Beach
My father often took me there, and it was fun hooking and catching all kinds of sea fish. In the deeper tanks there were large fish like rays and sharks, and I remember being scared of them.

Hankyu Nishinomiya Stadium, 1978 Pacific League regular season opener
Hankyu Nishinomiya Stadium
Every time I went, I was genuinely excited. The moment I could see the stadium just before the train arrived at Nishinomiya-kitaguchi Station. The moment it appeared beyond the fountain after passing through the shopping street in front of the station. The moment I came out through the passage into the stands and the whole field opened up before me. Even what we would now call stadium food was excellent. The team was appealing and played at a high level, and I was truly proud of them.

There was a Saint Bernard statue, and I liked the kids’ meals and fruit parfaits.

The old Co-op
There was an arcade and athletic play equipment on the rooftop, and I often bought cheap sweets at Niramekko. I liked the melon sherbet from the takoyaki shop.

SATY
Mister Donut, the okonomiyaki shop in the basement, Sazae’s ohagi, and the wagon sales in front of the main entrance!
Female in her 40s
Kitaguchi Market, Shin-Kitaguchi Market, and Kitaguchi Hondori Shopping Street
They were the center of my life as a child. I have so many memories there with family and friends. Back then, there were a lot of places using the name “Kitaguchi.”

Full view of Hankyu Nishinomiya Stadium in 1978
Nishinomiya Stadium
I was in the Hankyu Braves kids’ club, so I often went to watch games. There was something like a lottery, and when I won a baseball cap signed by a player, I was incredibly happy.
Male in his 40s
The boat-shaped playground equipment at Nishinomiyahama
When I was in elementary school, large boat-shaped playground equipment itself was unusual, and I had so much fun playing there that I still remember it.
Female in her 20s

The food court under Shukugawa Green Town and the dagashi shop Teruya
I was happy when I got to have ice cream or crepes while out shopping. I went to Teruya after school in elementary school. I remember an elderly man with glasses always being out front at the shop.
Female in her 40s
Dosanko Ramen
It was south of Mukogawa Women’s University, and when we ate ramen out, this was the place. When I tried it as an adult, the taste was so cheap that it was almost underwhelming, but as a child I enjoyed it as a luxury I got once or twice a year.
Male in his 50s
The fishing pond at Omaehama
There were three kinds of rods in different colors for 100 yen, 200 yen, and 300 yen, plus a bamboo rod for 300 yen. There were lots of fish that you would think could never be caught with rods like that, and once you hooked one, the line would snap. It was a pretty ruthless business aimed at children, but after forty years, it has become a good memory.
Male in his 50s
