It’s not cabbage, but apparently it was introduced to Japan as an edible plant back in the Edo period.
Its true identity is a plant called habotan.
Still, it does look a bit like cabbage, doesn’t it? It’s said to be one of the plants commonly associated with New Year’s.
The connection between New Year’s and habotan (ornamental kale) apparently began when ordinary people displayed it for New Year’s as a substitute for peonies that bloom in winter.
