General category: up to 4 units per person

Child-rearing support category: up to 2 units per household

If a married couple applies under the general category, they can save as much as 10,000 yen, so this is honestly a pretty big deal.

Application period: November 1 to November 15

Usage period: December 22 to February 29 next year

To use this benefit, you need the smartphone app. Links are available on the official page. Apparently the low ratings were due to registration issues common with early versions, but those have now been resolved.

The basic flow is as follows:

1. Download the app
2. Register with your email address and password
3. Verify by SMS using your mobile phone number
4. Apply to purchase through the app

In Closing

It may be intended as a household support measure amid rising prices, but there might also be a broader aim of getting people more comfortable using smartphone apps. Since most people will probably be shopping around the year-end and New Year holidays anyway, it seems like there’s no downside to buying it for now.
