So this time as well, we asked Juku Sherpa’s Tani-san, a Nishitsu Friend and an expert on cram schools and schools.

What role have junior colleges played?
According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, junior colleges have “played a major role, particularly in expanding higher education for women and serving as places for practical vocational training.” They also have a history of providing liberal arts and specialized education as “local, accessible institutions of higher education.”

But in the past few years, the number of high school students hoping to attend junior colleges has been on the decline… Reasons cited include:
- The impact of the declining birthrate
- Going on to a four-year university has become the norm
- Gender differences are becoming less emphasized in education
and other factors.
Which junior colleges remain around Nishinomiya?

Within Nishinomiya City, Kwansei Gakuin Junior College and Otemae Junior College are still operating.

Also near Nishinomiya City, one located in Amagasaki City along National Route 171 continues to operate. This college is the only engineering junior college in Hyogo Prefecture and is popular among students aiming to become engineers.
What is now expected of junior colleges?
As times change, it has become difficult for junior colleges to attract students simply by being “institutions of higher education where students can graduate in two years.” Perhaps the junior colleges that survive from now on will need “distinctive areas of specialization.”
Finally
It’s sad to see an educational institution rooted in Nishinomiya disappear, but perhaps this is also part of the changing times… What do you all think about the future of junior colleges?
※Iroha@Nishitsu SP, thank you very much for the information!!
