It looks like the reason is that Seven-Eleven stores nationwide are offering smoothies at half price. This is the Seven-Eleven Shukugawa store.
The watermelon smoothie is 400 yen, so half price makes it 200 yen. Apparently, Seven-Eleven stores around the city are doing it too.
For Seven-Eleven’s smoothies, you take a cup with the ingredients from the freezer case in the store,
then set it in the dedicated machine next to the register, and it makes the smoothie right there.

They’re apparently able to offer them cheaply because they use out-of-spec fruit, and now that already-low price is even half off. They’ve got that healthy appeal, they look tasty to begin with, and yeah, it makes sense they’d be crowded. If you’re interested, head to your nearest Seven-Eleven.
