Starting July 1, 2020, plastic shopping bags, the so-called checkout bags, will be charged for at stores nationwide.
Being the scatterbrain that I am, I mistakenly thought it started on June 1, but places like Coop and Aeon had already been charging for them for quite a while, right? Don Quijote has already started charging too.
When you hear “checkout bag,” you might think of the bags you get when buying groceries at a supermarket,
but apparently this also applies to plastic bags you get at convenience stores, department stores, and when buying clothes and things like that (・_・;)
From the city office website
The other day, when I bought clothes at Aeon, I just shoved them straight into my bag and went home ^^;
Starting in July, this kind of thing is going to become an everyday sight at stores everywhere…
Well, I could just buy a paid checkout bag, but I’m determined to put everything in my own bag…

Miyatan has also declared a move away from checkout bags for the future!
You can see the city office’s efforts to reduce checkout bags here.
Plastic is incredibly convenient and something we can’t really do without in daily life,
but it’s said that around 8 million tons of plastic waste flows into the ocean every year worldwide,
and there’s even a prediction that if things continue this way, by 2050 the weight of plastic waste in the ocean will exceed the weight of all the fish!
That’s a pretty shocking prediction….
We’ve got to bring eco-bags when we go out!!
Let’s make it a habit starting today (*^^)v
Oh, and it seems the “my bag” Miyatan is holding isn’t for sale,
but someone from the city’s Beautification Planning Section told us that since they’ve been getting a lot of inquiries, it might go on sale in the future (*^^)v
