Nishinomiya City libraries appear to have introduced self-checkout machines.
(This information was provided by Rirakuma-san. Thank you!)
※ Captured from Kobe Shimbun NEXT|Hanshin|Eight self-checkout machines introduced
It looks like the plan reported in a Kobe Shimbun article last August has now become a reality!
By the way, the libraries that have introduced self-checkout machines so far are Central Library and Naruo Library.
The third location is Kitaguchi Library, where preparations are currently underway.
We Tried It Out
Wondering what it’s like, we went straight to Naruo Library to check it out!

The self-checkout machine is located at the counter on the 2nd floor of Naruo Library.

You can use the self-checkout machine with your current library card that has a barcode, without needing to make a new card🙆
※Please pick up reserved books at the counter with a librarian!
We tried it out while getting instructions from someone at Naruo Library!↓↓

↑Instructions for using the machine are posted on the side, so no worries.
↓

Place all the books together on the black platform (inside the yellow frame).
↓

Just placing them there automatically scans them and displays them on the screen, so check the number of books and hold your library card over the scanner.
(If the number doesn’t match, some books may not have IC chips yet. Please go to the counter with a librarian!)
Hold the card so the barcode faces the machine side (the far side).
↓

Confirm the books and tap the checkout button (on the screen).
↓

A checkout receipt will come out, so pull it a little firmly.
↓

Finally, tap the confirmation button.
↓

Done!
The machine does almost everything for you, so all you really have to do is scan your barcode and confirm. Borrowing books was easy😊✌
In Closing
They are apparently in the process of attaching IC tags to Nishinomiya City’s 1.06 million library books, which sounds like a huge job😱 Thank you for all your hard work!!
It’s so quick that it feels like “put them on the platform and you’re done,” and you can borrow books without contact with another person. If you spot the machine at the library, give it a try💪
Rirakuma-san, thank you for the information!!
