Our Shukugawa lunch roundup article is here↓
A little north of Hankyu Shukugawa Station, you’ll find the galette specialty shop “Crêperie Repos.”
Galettes are a traditional dish from the Brittany region of France, but what exactly are they like?

Food at “Crêperie Repos”
This time, I ordered the “Ratatouille Galette” from the summer recommended menu.

This is the “Ratatouille Galette (small)” (1,150 yen).
Ratatouille is a dish from Provence in southern France, so this is a north-south French collaboration.
Of course, not only the galette but also the ratatouille was very delicious.
The cheese added a nice accent, giving it a slightly Italian feel, but the galette wrapped everything together and added another layer of flavor and texture. It was mysteriously delicious.
Since I was there, I also wanted to try a dessert galette, so I ordered the “Galette au Chocolat.”

This is the “Galette au Chocolat (small)” (520 yen) with chocolate ice cream topping (200 yen).
The pairing of the warm galette and cold ice cream really brought out the flavor.
This is the kind of dessert you can only enjoy at a restaurant.
It was also my first time trying the combination of buckwheat flour and cocoa, and it was very good.

After the meal, I had butter coffee (550 yen).
Échiré butter is melted into hot coffee.
Échiré butter is a cultured butter made in the village of Échiré in France, and I used it often back when I was working as a pastry chef.
It’s a fairly rich butter, but when melted into coffee, the two flavors complement each other beautifully.
Wow, that was good.
What Is a Galette?
Simply put, a galette is a crêpe made with buckwheat flour.
It is a traditional dish from the Brittany region of France, and it seems it was originally eaten as a staple food (kind of like bread), but when paired with something sweet, it also becomes a dessert.
Recently in Japan, there have apparently been many galette shops opening around Hakuba in Nagano Prefecture (Shinshu).
Brittany and Shinshu have something in common: both are known for buckwheat.
The owner, Mr. Kikuta, received a special prize at a contest held in Brittany and is said to be the only crêpier in Japan to have been awarded the title of “Chevalier” by the Pipriac Galette Association of Brittany (Chevalier = knight).

This is the Chevalier certificate.
It really gives off the feeling of being recognized by the home of galettes.

This is apparently the certificate from when he received the special prize at the contest.

This is the medal.

He was also featured in a local newspaper there.
Wow, he’s quite an impressive person.
These certificates and items are displayed inside the shop, so you can see them if you visit.
Menu at “Crêperie Repos”

They have not only galettes, but also a great selection of crêpes and other dishes, plus plenty of alcoholic drinks.
Cidre is an alcoholic apple beverage and is said to be a traditional drink from the Brittany region.
So that’s why galettes go with cidre.
Galettes can be enjoyed as a meal or as dessert, so you can enjoy this place in all kinds of ways: lunch at midday, café time in the afternoon, or dinner at night.
Inside “Crêperie Repos”
The interior has an overall French theme.
They’re so thorough that even the background music is French.

This is what it looks like.
Since it works as both a lunch spot and a café, it gets lively with local ladies on nice days.

Here, works by photographers, illustrators, painters, manga artists, artists, and others connected to the owner are on display.
They also apparently hold live performances inside the shop several times a year.
Exterior of “Crêperie Repos”
The shop itself is in a spot that is a little hard to find.
First, head north from Hankyu Shukugawa Station.

After walking for 1 to 2 minutes, you’ll come to a place like the one in the photo. Turn right here.

This sign on the corner is your landmark.

When you turn right, you’ll see a street like this.
The tricolor flag you can see is “Crêperie Repos.”

This is what the outside of the shop looks like.

This is the entrance.
