There’s a kushikatsu restaurant called “かつ源” that has been operating near Nishinomiya-kitaguchi for over 20 years.
It’s also featured in “Nishinomiya Gourmet Masters,” a book published this year that brings together some of Nishinomiya’s best restaurants.
I had never been there before, so I was curious to see what kind of place it was.
This time, I went to try the kushikatsu at “かつ源.”
“かつ源” Food
They offer courses where you can enjoy chef’s-choice kushikatsu.
This time, I went with the “Katsugen Course” of 18 kushikatsu skewers for 3,500 yen.
All-you-can-drink is 1,500 yen, so with that added, the total came to 5,000 yen.

There are four types of sauces and seasonings: from the left, “ponzu,” “Worcestershire sauce,” “sesame mustard,” and “salt.”
You can dip them in whatever you like, and the staff will tell you their recommendations, so even first-timers will be fine.

When it comes to kushikatsu, beer is the way to go.

The kushikatsu is served one by one as each skewer is fried, so you can always enjoy it freshly made.
We started with “head-on shrimp” and “broccoli.”

Already on my second glass.
Since it’s all-you-can-drink, there’s no need to hold back.
From here, another 16 kushikatsu skewers are served.

Third beer.
When you know it’s all-you-can-drink, your pace naturally picks up.

“Somen noodles” are served partway through.
A little break in the middle.

Fourth glass~

I drank a little too much, so I finished with oolong tea.
With items like “tofu,” “pork tenderloin,” “scallop,” “Japanese yam,” “chicken tenderloin wrapped with plum and shiso,” and “tuna bread,” it was a course where you can enjoy everything from classic skewers to more creative ones.
The course contents are chef’s choice and change daily, so please ask the restaurant for details.

Dessert is also included.
It was “white peach sherbet.”
For a course like this, with all-you-can-drink included, 5,000 yen seems like quite a good deal.
“かつ源” Menu

These are the three course options.

Of course, you can also order items individually.
There are also more wine menu options.

Inside “かつ源”
Inside, there are counter seats and table seats.

This is what the counter seats look like.
You can watch the skewers being fried right in front of you.

There are table seats toward the back of the restaurant.
This is where you’ll want to sit if you’re visiting as a group.
Exterior of “かつ源”

This is what the restaurant looks like from the outside.
There isn’t a very large sign, so keep an eye out when looking for it.
