The competition he placed in is the Queen Elisabeth Competition, one of the world’s three major music competitions and often called a gateway to success for young musicians. It has “Queen” in the name. Sounds fancy.
Yo Kitamura was born in Nishinomiya City in 2004. When he was in second grade, he became the youngest member of “Yutaka Sado and Super Kids Orchestra,” based at Hyogo Performing Arts Center, and gave his first recital at age 10. In other words, he’s a true elite talent!

In 2024, he also became the first Japanese winner of a major cello competition in Romania.

He is currently in high demand as a soloist, performing with symphony orchestras. He has also appeared several times on the TV program Untitled Concert.

It’s amazing to see an international musician come from Nishinomiya! Yo Kitamura is currently enrolled at Berlin University, but he also performs frequently in Japan. Classical music can feel a little hard to get into, but with Otobiba recently opening at LaLaport Koshien, it might start feeling more familiar. Maybe he’ll perform at our local Performing Arts Center someday.
