Hokkyokusei, a Western-style restaurant in Osaka, is known nationwide as the birthplace of omurice.
The name “Hokkyokusei” is said to have been chosen with the meaning of “a guiding star for daily life.”
Today, the restaurant has locations in various commercial facilities around Kansai, but in Hyogo Prefecture, its only location is in the food court at Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens.
This time, we visited “Hokkyokusei Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens” and tried the original omurice.

Food at “Hokkyokusei Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens”
We ordered the “Beef Stroganoff Omurice” (1,300 yen).
It comes with a salad.
This dish was originally offered as a limited-time menu item, but it was so popular that it was promoted to the regular menu.

Here is a close-up of the omurice.
The omurice features butter rice gently wrapped in egg, with a level of polish that really makes you think, “No wonder this is the original.”
The butter rice wasn’t overly buttery, but had a refined, delicious flavor with just a subtle buttery aroma.
It’s topped with a beef stroganoff-style sauce based on demi-glace sauce, so rather than a pure beef stroganoff, it feels like a combination of beef stew, hashed beef, and beef stroganoff.
The richness of the demi-glace sauce and fresh cream paired beautifully with the butter rice wrapped in egg.
It was a very delicious omurice, and it’s easy to see why so many people wanted it to stay on the menu and why it was promoted to a regular item.
