Just a little east of Hankyu Kurakuenguchi Station, in Kitanatsugicho, there is a workshop and shop called “0401（わたぬき）のハコ” that sells products made with Banshu-ori fabric.
“Watanuki” refers to April 1 on the old lunar calendar. The name is said to come from the custom of removing the cotton padding from kimono on this day after winter.
This shop is holding a Banshu-ori “Scrap Fabric Market” until November 1.
Normally, fabric is sold starting from 1 meter, but during this limited period, you can purchase offcuts under 1 meter.
What is Banshu-ori?
Banshu-ori is a woven textile that has been produced in Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, since the Edo period.
It is characterized by plain weaving using “yarn-dyed” threads, meaning the threads are dyed before being woven. Today, it is mainly used as fabric for shirts.
Even if you don’t know the name “Banshu-ori,” it is apparently a fabric people often wear without realizing it.
