We received memories from readers about “Chikomart” in Mondo-Yakujin, which closed on March 31, 2024, so we’re sharing them here.
Comments from Nishi2 readers about “Chikomart”
More than 40 years ago, when I was a student at Koto Elementary School, this was where I went with 200 yen clutched in my hand to buy snacks for school trips, back when it was K Mart… It had been going for 50 years… I’m sad to see it go.

I’m a graduate of Jogakuin. I often passed by on my way to and from school. Right after starting school, one of my friends gorged herself on the roasted sweet potatoes here, lol.

It was part of the walking route I took with my daughter when she had just started walking. She’s 4 now, and even recently we’d stop by after her lessons to buy snacks. We have so many memories here.

It’s such a shame that Chikomart is closing. The smoked ham from Niku no Miyako that you can only buy here is amazing 😊 I’ll go get some before it closes.

I’m just so sad it’s closing. Why does it have to close? So sad.

I wonder if it’s going to reopen after renovations. Long ago, there was an arcade next to the store where games were 50 yen each, and I used to go there all the time.

I’ve lived around here for about 10 years and used this place often, so I’m sad to see it go. I loved the roasted sweet potatoes they sold in winter and bought them every year.

Before it was Chikomart, I think it was K Mart. If you count from the K Mart days, that makes 50 years. Three generations of our family have been helped by this store. When we stopped by on the way home from kindergarten, my child would beg for sweets, and the staff at the butcher shop were always so kind. I wonder what will happen next.

If I remember correctly, this store used to be a convenience store…

Nooo 😱 I was so happy thinking, “I found a great place with cheap vegetables!” so this is a shock 😨

When I was attending Mondo Kindergarten, I remember using this shop for an event where we made pork miso soup or something like that. Long ago, it was an Itochu-affiliated chain store, and I remember the sign said “Chikomart” with a boy drawn on it. It’s sad to see a store name I’ve known since I was little disappear.

I bought vegetables, meat, and fruit here for everyday use, so it’s very disappointing. It was really convenient on the way home from the station.

Final Thoughts
Since it had apparently been open for half a century, many people must have remembered it from childhood. We hope the new “Mondo Mart” will stay open for many years to come.
