The road widening work will take place here ↓
The address is around 6 Koshikiiwacho, Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture.
This area of the Osawa Nishinomiya Line is almost directly north of Koshikiiwa Shrine.
The section runs from just above Ginsuibashi Bridge to the intersection with Koshikiiwa-suji.
The distance is about 180m. The total project cost is said to be about 400 million yen.

A site office has also been set up near the construction area 😃

Two reasons why the work is needed
Quoted from Microsoft PowerPoint – 01_新規評価【交通安全】(主)大沢西宮線(甑岩町)歩道設置_v11
- Because it is also a school route for Kurakuen Elementary School, and despite the large number of pedestrians, the sidewalk is narrow and dangerous.

- Because the roadway is also narrow, and traffic accidents frequently occur on the curve, making it necessary to widen the roadway.

At present, both the roadway and sidewalk are narrow, and there have apparently been many hazards. This construction aims to eliminate those dangers by widening both the roadway and sidewalk.
Here’s what it will look like ↓

The roadway width will be expanded by 25cm, and the sidewalk width by 1m compared with the current layout. Overall, the entire road will become 1.5m wider
The roadway will have a little more room on the curve, making it easier for drivers to see what is ahead.
The sidewalk will also become wide enough for one adult and two children to walk side by side. It should feel much safer when passing others too 😊
It may also affect a sacred spot for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya fans

The road from the Kamizonocho intersection toward Kashiwadocho is also used as a school route to Nishinomiya Kita High School (Nishinomiya

The scenery is drawn almost exactly as it appears in real life in the anime, and many fans from across Japan and around the world come from Koyoen Station to take on the “climb” up to Kita High, rather than just a school commute.
By the way, Koyoen Station is at an elevation of 40m, while Kita High’s main gate is at an elevation of 188m.
That means the elevation difference is 148m
First- and second-year students at Nishinomiya Kita High School attend school about 195 days per year
Doing the math:
148m × 195 days = 28,860m
→ That means climbing 28,860m in one year
Divide that by Mount Everest’s elevation of 8,849m:
28,860m ÷ 8,849m = 2.58 times, which rounds up to about 3 times
In other words, over one year, it’s like climbing Mount Everest 3 times!
This is based only on the number of school days at Kita High, so students who go to school on holidays for club activities may be doing the equivalent of about four Everest climbs.

Everyone should try the Kita High climb sometime! You’ll be able to see the same scenery as in the anime.
Finally

Incidentally, at the location shown in this photo, there have reportedly been 4 injury accidents and 53 property-damage accidents over the past five years 💦 Hopefully, the upcoming road widening work will make the area safer and easier for both cars and pedestrians to pass through 😊 Construction is scheduled to continue until December 22, Reiwa 7 (2025).
