Nishinomiya Central Sports Park to Undergo Major Renewal with Completion Planned Around 2029

It looks like Nishinomiya Central Sports Park will undergo a major renovation by 2029.

The address is 2-7 Kawahara-cho, Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.

So,

We’ll clearly explain what has been decided so far about how the current Central Sports Park will change.

Central Gymnasium

The gymnasium floor is now being called the Main Arena. Spectator seats will also be added, making it easier to hold tournaments and events.

Athletics Stadium

Part of the spectator seating area will apparently have a roof.

Also, the outer area around the track will be developed so it can be used for athletes’ warm-ups and as a viewing space.

Park Facilities

・An inclusive plaza where everyone can gather and play
※An inclusive plaza is a space where everyone can play together, regardless of disability, nationality, or other differences.

・The tennis courts will continue to be available

・The practice wall tennis court will be redeveloped

・A new dedicated playground area for children ages 1 to 3
・A new entrance plaza and lively activity plaza where various events can be held
・A new outdoor court for ball games and other multipurpose use
・New walking and running courses, plus outdoor fitness equipment

Disaster Prevention Facilities

・The new Central Gymnasium will be developed so it can be used as an evacuation shelter during disasters
・The new athletics stadium will be developed so it can be used as a temporary heliport during disasters
・Disaster stockpile warehouses, manhole toilets, outdoor loudspeaker substations for disaster prevention administrative radio, and other facilities will be installed

Other Facilities

・Parking for about 300 cars will be developed, including temporary parking and the Nakaya-cho parking lot
・Road improvements and sidewalk development on the west side of the park
・Expansion of rainwater storage tanks

Facilities That Will Be Removed

The multipurpose ground, or so-called baseball field, and the Nishinomiya Sports Center will be removed.

※The multipurpose ground will be demolished. As an alternative facility, Koshienhama Baseball Stadium was already developed in fiscal 1998.

Privately Proposed Facilities

Since private companies will be asked to submit proposals for this area, facilities like dining options and other amenities that would be nice to have in a large sports park like this may be created.

When Will Construction Start?

It looks like the project will move forward on this kind of schedule.

Finally

When we reported on this in 2019, the plan was for it to be completed by 2025, but the timing and details have changed due to COVID and various other circumstances. Under the current plan, completion is six years away, so it feels a bit like déjà vu, as if we’re starting over from square one.
