Quoted from 武庫川女子大学 -Mukogawa Women’s University-
Along with becoming coeducational in the 2027 academic year, the university is also expected to change its name to “Mukogawa University.”
Details are expected to be officially announced after the Board of Directors meeting on July 28.

Why is it becoming coeducational?

Regarding this move toward coeducation, the university has mainly explained it through forward-looking ideas such as:
- wanting to broaden understanding of gender and diversity
- wanting to open learning opportunities regardless of gender or age
- moving toward a new idea called “kaigaku,” or learning for everyone, rather than simply coeducation
These are the kinds of positive principles being emphasized.
Mukogawa Women’s University was founded in 1939 to expand opportunities for women in higher education. The university also noted that the percentage of women advancing to university, which was only 2% at the time of its founding, has now exceeded 50%, with the gender gap having nearly disappeared, meaning the university’s original purpose has, to some extent, been achieved.
Some media reports have also suggested that another factor may be that it has become increasingly difficult to secure female students due to the declining birthrate.
Changes that Nishinomiya locals might be wondering about?
If the university’s name changes, these are the kinds of things Nishinomiya locals are probably curious about too.
What will happen to the station name “Naruo-Mukogawajoshidai-Mae Station”?

Will it change to something like “Mukogawadai-Mae Station”?Will Hanshin Bus stops also be renamed?

At the moment, the stop is called “Mukogawa Women’s University-mae,” but the change could affect public transportation names too. What will happen to the nickname “Mukojo”?

If it becomes Mukogawa University, will people start calling it “Mukodai” from now on? The change in what people call it may gradually become a topic of conversation too.新しい愛称は何になると思う?- 武庫大(むこだい)44.1%(79票)

Finally
Actually, I myself and my younger sister too graduated from Mukojo, and I do feel there was a certain atmosphere and sense of comfort precisely because it was a women’s university. To be honest, I feel a little sad about the name of my alma mater changing. Current students may feel that even more strongly. That said, considering the many changes that come with the times, this decision may be a choice made with the university’s future survival in mind.
