Starting this school year, Nishinomiya City has introduced “emergency stockpile meals” for school lunches when a typhoon is expected to approach.
Since the stockpile meals had not been used since April, curry rice made with retort curry and alpha rice was served for school lunch in January 2021.

Because school lunches use ingredients in large quantities, orders are placed with suppliers in advance. However, when a typhoon is expected to approach, it can be difficult to decide whether school lunch will be served, and there have been cases where ingredients went to waste.
So starting this school year, retort curry and alpha rice are being stocked. If a typhoon approaches and a warning is expected to be issued, the lunch will be switched to stockpile food to avoid wasting ingredients.
Then, in January after typhoon season ends, the stored stockpile food is used for school lunch, and new stockpile food is prepared for the next typhoon.
Let’s take this opportunity to think about stockpile food for disaster preparedness。
I thought this was a really good initiative, since it helps reduce food loss and also gives students a chance to think about disasters.

Apparently, there are currently no stockpile meals other than curry, and the next stockpile meal is expected to be served sometime between May and October.
