It’s not cabbage, but apparently it was introduced to Japan as an edible plant during the Edo period.
Its true identity is a plant called habotan.

Still, it does look a bit like cabbage, doesn’t it? It’s said to be one of the essential plants for New Year’s.
Apparently, the custom of decorating with habotan (ornamental cabbage) for New Year’s began when ordinary people used it as a substitute for peonies that bloom in winter.

You might not notice it from this direction.
