Just a little east of Hankyu Kurakuen-guchi Station, in Kitanaijicho, there is a workshop and shop called “0401(わたぬき)のハコ,” which sells products made with Banshu-ori fabric.
“Watanuki” refers to the first day of the fourth month in the old lunar calendar. The name is said to come from the custom of removing the cotton padding from kimono on this day after winter.
This shop is holding a Banshu-ori “fabric remnant market” until November 1.

Usually, fabric is sold starting from 1 meter, but during this limited period you can buy remnants under 1 meter.
What is Banshu-ori?
Banshu-ori is a woven textile that has been produced in Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, since the Edo period.
It is known for its plain weave made with yarn-dyed threads, meaning the threads are dyed before being woven. Today, it is mainly used as shirting fabric.
Even if you have not heard the name “Banshu-ori,” it is apparently a fabric many people have actually worn before.
