Here’s this time’s quiz↓
Q. How do you read this town name? “石刎町”

Correct answer rate within Nishitsu: 33%

(The Shukugawa River near Ishibane-cho, under the Hankyu elevated tracks. Don’t places like this feel oddly exciting?)
The correct answer is “Ishibane-cho.”

“刎”
There are probably quite a few people who have no idea how to read the kanji above.
Right??
Apparently it’s read “hane,” and it comes from the word for “to jump” or “to bounce.”
The Origin of Ishibane-cho
I looked into the origin of Ishibane-cho,
and it seems this was a place where stones from around Koshikiiwa were quarried and processed during the Edo period for the construction of Osaka Castle.
So “ishi wo haneru” means “to process stone.”
Ishibane-cho is here on the map↓
The address is Ishibane-cho, Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture.
