Here’s a roundup of bird articles published on Nishinomiya Tsushin.
I’m hoping this will become something like a field guide to birds commonly seen in Nishinomiya. We’ll keep updating it.

A Japanese Tit near MaxValu in Kurakakecho

Chirping video ↓
- Its name is “Shijukara” (Japanese tit; written in kanji as 四十雀).
- A very familiar little bird you can see almost anywhere.
- In spring, when males sing to claim their territory, they chirp loudly with a “tsutsupin, tsutsupin♪” sound.
- They like sunflower seeds.
- They can also be seen around neighborhoods in Chiba Prefecture and Kawasaki.
- In winter, if you hang up some beef fat in the garden (the white fat used when making sukiyaki and such; is it called beef tallow?), they happily come to eat it.
- They are often found in parks in Japanese cities.
- Despite their small bodies, they have a loud call.
- The black stripe down the center of the body is the key feature to look for.
- Since autumn arrived, they’ve recently become easier to spot around town too.
- The “necktie” under the neck is distinctive.
