Have you ever seen red things lying around here and there in Nishinomiya that look like those old-fashioned candies from the Showa era?
This↓

Doesn’t it look familiar?
This one↓

Especially the way it looks coated in sugar.
Apparently, even though it looks super strawberry-like, it’s called “Sakuranbo Candy.”
By the way, it looks like they’re still selling it even now.

Actually, this is a fruit called yama-momo (bayberry).
It’s apparently resistant to air pollution, so it’s often planted in parks and along streets.
There’s one here near Sakura Shukugawa Station too↓

If you know any other places where yama-momo trees are growing, please let us know.

Donguri candy. This one looks even more similar.
Apparently, they used to sell it at supermarkets too. The taste is said to be “more tart than peach, and apparently sour.” The size is about the same as a cherry. It has a bumpy texture.
It seems like it would be good made into jam or juice too. I wonder if candy wouldn’t work.
