The near side is the Koshien-suji side (west side), and the far side is the Hongo Gakubun-suji side (east side).

Compared with the areas where the zelkova trees remain, the roadway is narrower where the trees are gone!
Actually, construction work is currently underway along the Old National Highway to “widen the sidewalks,”
and the sidewalks, which were originally 3 meters wide, are being expanded to 4 meters. The photo above shows the area around Lifort, where the work has already been completed.

Apparently, as the sidewalk is widened, the zelkova trees would get in the way of pedestrians if left as they are, so they are being cut down😮
New planting squares for roadside trees will be created along the widened sidewalks, and saplings will be planted one by one🌱Apparently, the area east of the Ozone Line has already been planted.
The construction is being carried out section by section, and the process goes like this:
First, the trees are cut down
↓
Utility poles and power lines are moved
↓
The trees are removed together with their roots
↓
The sidewalk is expanded and the roadway is worked on (paving, lane markings, guardrails, etc.)
↓
New zelkova trees are planted
This whole sequence alone apparently takes half a year. It’s quite a major project😳
The work began near the Mukogawa River and is progressing westward, and it will continue all the way to the Meishin Expressway.
Once the sidewalks are nicer, it should feel better to walk there, and since they’ll be wider, it’ll also be easier for people with strollers or wheelchairs to get through.
