Right in front of Hanshin Nishinomiya Station, just after entering the shopping street, there’s a place called “や台ずし 阪神西宮えびす町” (there’s also a second location very nearby).
Looking at the sign, it says authentic nigiri sushi is 59 yen or 99 yen, but…
Apparently, it’s a sushi izakaya-style restaurant.
Sounds interesting.
This time, we visited “や台ずし 阪神西宮えびす町.”

Challenge Start!
They have all kinds of menu items besides sushi, but since we’re here, I’m going to focus entirely on nigiri sushi this time.
How far can 3,000 yen get us?
First up is the “tsukidashi” appetizer (220 yen).
Today’s dish is “Chikuzen-ni.”
The first drink is a “draft beer (medium mug)” (490 yen).
It’s The Premium Malt’s.
To start, I got “natto” (59 yen) and “tamago” (59 yen).
These prices are per piece, and they’re served one piece at a time.
It’s nice because you can try a little bit of everything.
Now for the second drink. I found an unusual drink, so I ordered it.
It’s “Gari-chu” (430 yen).
A chuhai made with gari pickled ginger.
It has a subtle gari flavor, as you’d expect.
Next are “madai” sea bream (129 yen) and “shima-aji” striped jack (159 yen).
The toppings are fresh too, and just like the sign says, this is authentic nigiri sushi.
Still, it’s really cheap…
The third drink is another Gari-chu.
For the refill, they pour plain chuhai into the same mug from earlier.
You get a slightly different flavor from the first glass.
Now, this is probably about the last round.
I ordered “karashi mentaiko gunkan” (159 yen), “seared salmon” (129 yen), and “otoro” fatty tuna (399 yen).
At this point, it feels completely like I’m at a sushi restaurant rather than an izakaya.
So what did the bill come to?

That’s surprisingly cheap…
This time I ordered: tsukidashi, draft beer (medium mug), Gari-chu x 2, tamago, natto, madai, shima-aji, karashi mentaiko gunkan, seared salmon, and otoro.
That was everything!
