There are lots of hidden gems around Hankyu Shukugawa Station.
The “Aka Tombo” we’re introducing this time is one of them.
It’s an okonomiyaki and teppanyaki restaurant, but since it’s on the second floor of an inconspicuous building, it doesn’t really stand out.
They’re also open for lunch, so this time we stopped by during lunchtime.

“Aka Tombo” Food
The menu mainly features okonomiyaki and teppanyaki dishes.
This time, we ordered the mixed “modan-yaki” (1,000 yen).
Here is the “modan-yaki.”
When I was about to order okonomiyaki, the owner told me, “If you want to fill up, modan-yaki is the better choice,” so I decided to go with that.
Modan-yaki is okonomiyaki with udon or soba noodles inside.
It’s similar to Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, but it doesn’t have quite as much cabbage.
Still, when you think about it, it’s the ultimate flour-based dish: flour batter sandwiching more flour.
I cut into it.
This is what the inside looks like.
There are bonito flakes (or more like powder) and aonori seaweed on the table, so you can add them as you like.
I wrote that it’s flour batter sandwiching flour, but the outer layer didn’t actually have that much flour in it; it was more egg-based.
It felt like something between Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and omu-soba.
The mixed version comes with shrimp, squid, and pork.
It went really well with the sauce and was very tasty.
