Acta Nishinomiya opened in April 2001, and there are still a few shops that have been there since it first opened.
One of them is the shop we’re introducing this time, “饂飩の四國,” which has continued operating on the 1st floor of the West Building since Acta opened.
As the name suggests, the business apparently started in Shikoku, later expanded to Osaka, and then began opening locations nationwide as a second phase of expansion in the 2000s.
It originally specialized in udon, but today it also serves dishes and alcoholic drinks beyond udon, with a solid lineup of lunch options as well.
This time, we had lunch at this restaurant, which helped bring authentic Sanuki udon to the Kansai area.

“饂飩の四國 Acta Nishinomiya” Food

They offer set meals with udon and another dish, so I ordered the “Hand-Prepared Katsu Nabe Set” (1,080 yen).
As you can see, it’s basically a katsudon, but the rice and katsu nabe are served separately.
For the udon, you can choose between hot udon and bukkake udon, and during lunchtime you can get free large servings of both rice and udon.
This time, I chose the hot udon.

You place the katsu nabe on top of the rice yourself to complete the katsudon.
Since you add it right before eating, the rice doesn’t get soggy, and you can directly enjoy the flavors of the tonkatsu, warishita sauce, and rice.
The warishita had a fairly strong soy sauce flavor, and it felt like it had been designed to pair well with the lightly seasoned udon.
I had the regular size this time instead of the large serving, but it was still quite filling.

This is the “small udon.”
The noodles are the chewy Sanuki-style udon you’d expect.
Sanuki udon is probably more common these days, so it may be the kind of udon many people are used to eating.
The broth was also very tasty.
It was lightly seasoned, but the flavor of the dashi (apparently made with iriko dried sardines) came through clearly, giving it an elegant finish.
Since it was katsudon and udon, I thought it might be a little heavy, but it wasn’t at all. It was the kind of set meal where each item brought out the best in the other, making everything taste even better.
