Speaking of “吉兵衛,” it’s a katsudon specialty restaurant with locations in Osaka and Kobe, but it actually also has a shop in Nishinomiya, in Imazu Minatomachi.
Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus, dining in at the restaurant is currently suspended, but they’ve apparently expanded their takeout menu a little from before.
This time, we bought takeout from “吉兵衛 今津港町店.”

Katsudon “吉兵衛 今津港町店” Food
Here’s what we bought this time: the “Korean Spicy Miso Mayo Katsudon (regular)” (830 yen).
For all katsudon items at this shop, you can choose either “back loin” or “shoulder loin.”
The “back loin” is a little lighter and easier to eat, while the “shoulder loin” has a bit more fat and feels more hearty.
This time, we chose the “shoulder loin.”
Unlike the traditional katsudon simmered in dashi broth, this one is seasoned with a gochujang-style sauce and mayonnaise. Even though it was takeout, the breading still had a nice texture.
It has a gochujang flavor, but thanks to the mayonnaise and soft-boiled egg, it isn’t all that spicy.
If anything, it really brings out the sweetness and umami of the pork, and it was very tasty.
