Mainstream Association’s Story

1989 Mainstream Association established

1993 “Disabled Persons Koshien” held
(a camp for high school students with disabilities from across Japan to foster independence and awareness of human rights)

1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake; office collapses
(activities resume from a temporary prefab office)

1997 New office opens

1999 Begins accepting trainees for the Duskin Leadership Training Program in Japan for Persons with Disabilities in Asia and the Pacific

2001 Japan-Korea TRY
(advocating for accessibility at the World Cup in Korea)

2008 Begins accepting trainees for JICA Central America and Caribbean regional training

2012 JICA Partnership Program: Costa Rica Independent Living Promotion Project begins

2012 KOKOROZASHI IL Conference held
(members from seven countries who became leaders through Duskin training gather to review conditions in each country and the support needed)

2015 Turning Point @ RYUGAKU
(discovering young people with disabilities who will lead the next generation)

2017 JICA Partnership Program: Project for Building Social Support for Persons with Disabilities begins

2023 JICA Partnership Program: Mongolia Independent Living Center Strengthening Project begins
