“Mukogawa Women’s University is going co-ed.” That news was reported the other day, and we started getting a flood of tips from Nishitsu readers saying, “Wait, Mukojo is?!” so we recently wrote an article about it.
This time, we’re joined by Mr. Tani from Juku Sherpa.
Mr. Tani has been in the education industry for over 25 years and is an entrance-exam navigator who knows Nishinomiya’s schools and cram school scene inside and out. From the perspective of a professional who handles more than 300 academic path consultations a year, he explained what this move to coeducation means and what may lie ahead for girls’ schools.
This has been picked up by national news and is having a major impact on the women’s university sector. Even as the so-called “move away from girls’ schools” continues, Mukogawa Women’s University had maintained an enrollment fulfillment rate of 95%. But it appears the university decided to go co-ed in order to offer a more diverse learning environment.
Top-Class Results Among Women’s Universities, Yet Still Moving to Coeducation
Mukojo has strong employment results, and I’ve heard it ranks No. 1 nationwide among women’s universities for the pass rate of first-class architects, right?
That’s exactly right. It has been highly regarded for teacher training and architect training, and its employment results were among the best of all women’s universities. Even so, looking ahead to the declining birthrate and the drop in applicants seeking girls’ schools, the university has decided to shift toward becoming “a university where students can develop expertise regardless of gender.”
Koshien Junior College to Stop Recruiting Students: Headwinds for Junior Colleges Too
Come to think of it, there was also news that Koshien Junior College will stop recruiting students from the 2026 academic year.
Yes. It was announced this February, and the role that junior colleges had built as a key part of women’s education is also changing. There is certainly concern that the range of options for students choosing their next path may narrow.
The Affiliated Junior and Senior High Schools Will Remain Girls’ Schools, and Their Unique Appeal Is Still Going Strong
The junior and senior high schools affiliated with Mukogawa Women’s University will remain girls’ schools, right?
Yes, they are expected to continue operating as girls’ schools. When I visited last year, I found their curriculum, which lets students learn proactively in a way that is distinctive to girls’ schools, very appealing. It reminded me once again that boys’ schools and girls’ schools have educational value that differs from co-ed schools.
Will Options Decrease? The Key Is for Girls’ Schools and Co-ed Schools to Coexist
If there are fewer girls’ schools, won’t that narrow the choices for entrance exam students?
That concern is certainly real. Having a variety of learning environments available is essential for each student’s growth. The shift to coeducation is a positive evolution, but at the same time, I hope girls’ schools will continue to remain as an option.
What Will Happen to the Station Name? We’re Curious About the Local Details Too!
I wonder if the Hanshin Railway station name, “Naruo-Mukogawa Women’s University-mae Station,” will change?
There has been no announcement at this stage. We’ll have to wait and see what Hanshin Electric Railway does regarding a possible station name change.

That said, Mukogawa Women’s University is not going away. Rather, I think this is a positive decision aimed at helping it develop even further. As one of Kansai’s leading prestigious schools, I have high hopes for what comes next.
