Nishinomiya City is planning to change its garbage sorting categories starting in Reiwa 8 (April 2026), but it looks like some areas will begin ahead of schedule.
We wrote about this before, but since the early collection starts today, we’re sharing it again because it’s important. Please let us know if anything is incorrect.

Areas Covered by the Early Implementation
The early collection will take place in the area south of National Route 2, outlined in the map below.

*Excludes coastal areas such as Nishinomiyahama and Takasu-cho, as well as large apartment complexes that use rotating containers or drum-type storage units.
Early Implementation Period
Reiwa 8 (2026)
January 5 (Mon) to March 31 (Tue)
In the target area, the changes to sorting categories will begin three months early!
For areas outside the target area, the changes will start from April 1 (Wed), Reiwa 8.
What Will Change?
The “Other Plastic” bag will be discontinued
| Current | From Reiwa 8 | |
|---|---|---|
| Types of garbage bags | “Burnable Garbage” and “Other Plastic” | “Burnable Garbage” and the “Common Designated Bag” |
Sales of “Other Plastic” bags will end. They will be replaced by the “Common Designated Bag.”
It’s unclear whether the “Common Designated Bag” will already be on sale when the early implementation starts in January. By the way, items that should go in the common designated bag can apparently also be collected if placed in an Other Plastic bag. So if you still have lots of bags left, no need to worry.
The Common Designated Bag looks like this↓

The illustration design seems to be the same as the one used for Other Plastic bags😄
How Will the Sorting Categories Change?
The new sorting categories↓

Broadly speaking, it will look like this↓
All recyclables will be collected on the same day. PET bottle collection will increase, while glass bottle collection will decrease
| Change | Current | From Reiwa 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Recyclables A and B will be combined | Recyclables A (once a month), Recyclables B (twice a month) | They will become one category: Recyclables (paper resources, etc.) (twice a month) |
| Collection frequency for PET bottles | Twice a month | Once a week (increases) |
| Collection frequency for glass bottles | Once a week | Twice a month (decreases) |
Cardboard and paper items will all be collected on the same day, making things simpler.

Only glass bottles will be disposed of in containers
| Change | Current | From Reiwa 8 |
|---|---|---|
| “Non-burnable Garbage” will become “Other Non-burnable Garbage” | Ceramics, small metal items, spray cans, batteries, fluorescent tubes, etc. were disposed of as Non-burnable Garbage. Small composite products, umbrellas, and small home appliances were disposed of as Burnable Garbage. | The items listed on the left should be disposed of as “Other Non-burnable Garbage”. Place them in a Common Designated Bag and dispose of them once a week. |
| How to dispose of cans and PET bottles | They were placed in blue containers | Place them in a Common Designated Bag and dispose of them once a week. Blue containers will not be used. *“Glass bottles” should still be placed in blue containers as before. |
| The classification of plastic products will change *See the notes below* | Plastic products that are not used to wrap contents, such as hangers, toys, cases, and stationery, were disposed of as Burnable Garbage | Dispose of them as Plastic Resources by placing them in a Common Designated Bag once a week. |
Also, PET bottles and cans will be able to be disposed of together in the same bag!
During the early implementation period, please continue to dispose of plastic products as before, as “Burnable Garbage.” From April of Reiwa 8 onward, please put them out as “Plastic Resources.”

Finally
Because the crushing and sorting facility at the Western Comprehensive Waste Treatment Center operating in Nishinomiyahama is aging, a new facility is currently being built next to the Eastern Comprehensive Waste Treatment Center in Naruo-hama. It is scheduled to begin operation in Reiwa 8, and this early implementation will apparently also serve as a trial run.
The new sorting categories may feel a little confusing at first, but once you get used to them, they seem like they’ll be more convenient and easier than before🙌 If you live in one of the early implementation areas, let’s get familiar with the changes before the end of the year.
