“Ebisu-sama is holding a fish that isn’t a sea bream”—we received this shocking bit of information, along with a photo, that would make any Nishinomiya resident who loves Ebisu-sama doubt their ears.
And it came not from Nishinomiya, but from someone in Kesennuma City, Miyagi Prefecture!

Usually, when you hear “Ebisu-sama,” you picture him holding a sea bream like this, right?
This Ebisu-sama is also enshrined at Isuzu Shrine in Kesennuma City.
Apparently, it was washed away by the tsunami, but was recovered from the seabed in January this year!

This is the Ebisu-sama photo in question! ↑
What kind of fish is Kesennuma’s Ebisu-sama holding, anywayー!!!!?

The answer↓↓↓

The answer was “bonito”!
Believe it or not, Kesennuma City apparently has the highest bonito catch volume in Japan!
Related article/Bonito landed at Kesennuma Fishing Port in the first sizable catch of the season
By the way, they also say it has the highest shark catch in Japan.
But holding a shark under his arm would be… dangerous, wouldn’t it?
