You can apply through Coca-Cola’s smartphone app
It looks like applications for torchbearers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics can be submitted through sponsor company Coca-Cola Japan’s smartphone app.
There are three steps to apply.
- Install the app
- Use the app to scan the support mark printed on the label of eligible products such as cola
- Enter the required information and apply
This application is for the preliminary screening, and those who pass will move on to the main selection.

Eligibility requirements to become a torch relay runner
There are eligibility requirements for torch relay runners.
- Born on or before April 1, 2008 (junior high school age or older as of April 2020)
- Must have a connection to the prefecture where they will run
- Political or religious promotion is not allowed
- People holding public office, such as assembly members, and candidates are not eligible
- Must be able to carry the torch safely. Support from an assistant is allowed.
- No restrictions on nationality or gender.
What does “having a connection to the prefecture where they will run” mean?
For the eligibility requirement of “having a connection to the prefecture where they will run,” one of the following must apply.
- Currently lives there
- Has lived there in the past
- Currently has a workplace or school there
- Has family or relatives living there
- Has been active there in the past
A self-introduction and reason for applying of at least 200 Japanese characters is required

Application deadline is August 31
This time, the company recruiting torch relay runners is Coca-Cola.
Applications from Toyota, Nippon Life, and NTT also appear to begin on June 24.
