At 7:00 p.m. on August 8, Nishinomiya City’s Disaster Prevention Portal published an announcement titled “Regarding the Japan Meteorological Agency’s Nankai Trough Earthquake Extra Information (Megaquake Advisory).”

To summarize the announcement:
- At around 4:40 p.m. on August 8, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred with its epicenter in the Hyuga-nada Sea
- In response, experts held a “Review Meeting on Earthquakes Along the Nankai Trough”
- According to the announcement, the possibility of a major earthquake has increased in the assumed source area of a Nankai Trough megaquake
If a Nankai Trough earthquake occurs, there will be 112 minutes before impact
If a Nankai Trough earthquake occurs, the first tsunami would reach Nishinomiya City in 112 minutes. The estimated maximum tsunami height is 3.7 m.
The maximum seismic intensity is expected to be lower 6, but the shaking would continue for over a minute, making damage more likely.

Finally
When I saw today’s emergency earthquake alert on my phone showing an estimated seismic intensity of upper 6 and M7.2, I thought, “(Nankai Trough) Is it here?” With this earthquake raising the possibility of another one occurring in the future, it’s a good time to make sure once again that you’re prepared to respond if it does happen.
