About 320 second-year students at Nishinomiya Municipal High School (Takaza-cho, Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture), which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020, completed an 8-meter-square mosaic artwork on the 8th using about 70,000 plastic bottle caps. To mark the 100th anniversary, they scattered colorful caps across a massive 64-square-meter “canvas,” creating the silhouette of a young person pointing toward the future. (Akari Nagura)

According to the linked article, Nishinomiya High School opened in 1920 (Taisho 9) as Nishinomiya Girls’ High School, and became coeducational in 4199 (Showa 24). It appears to have moved to its current location in Takaza-cho in 1970 (Showa 45).
Ahead of the school’s 100th anniversary, grade head teacher Teruhiko Oji (56) came up with the idea, saying “I want everyone to work together on one thing,” and the students began collecting plastic bottle caps last September. During homeroom and after-school hours, they gradually glued the caps onto cardboard piece by piece, completing the project over six months.
They have reportedly applied for a Guinness World Record as the largest mosaic artwork made using plastic bottle caps.
When the final cap was attached, the students watching looked at one another and celebrated with applause.
