Starting with this article, we’re trying a new project: “3,000-yen izakaya drinking.”
As the name suggests, the idea is to see just how much you can eat and drink at an izakaya for 3,000 yen or less.
For the very first installment, we visited the izakaya “Kiteya Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi” near Hankyu Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Station.
Why this place? Because for a limited time, their highballs are just 99 yen.
Normally a highball is 450 yen, so that’s a huge discount.
It’s perfect for this project.

Challenge Start!
Orders are placed using a touch panel.
First, one draft beer…

A draft beer is 390 yen, so that’s pretty affordable too.
Normally, a highball is 450 yen, meaning beer is actually cheaper.
By the way, the appetizer charge, including the seating charge, is 350 yen.

I finished the beer in no time, and now the real challenge begins. This is the 99-yen highball.
There are four types, but I’m planning to keep drinking the standard highball all the way.

For food, this was my first order.
It’s “Kiteya’s Special Chicken Nanban” (480 yen).
It’s tasty, and the portion is satisfying too.
It really makes the drinks go down…

Here’s a progress report so far.
This is why the touch panel is so convenient.
Now, it’s time to enter the highball refill zone!

While drinking highballs, I next ordered this “Tsukimi Tsukune” (490 yen).
It’s apparently a popular menu item, and I can see why. It’s really satisfying.

At this point, I’ve had the appetizer, one draft beer, three highballs, chicken nanban, and tsukimi tsukune.
After eating this much, I’m still only a little over 2,000 yen.

I tried ordering “Onigirazu Kiteya Style” (250 yen).
It’s just right for wrapping things up.

Since we’re here, let’s have dessert too.
This is “Chocolate Ice Cream” (390 yen).
Going from a rice dish to sweets at the end feels pretty blissful…
So, what did the final bill come to?

Ohhh, it came in perfectly under 3,000 yen!!
The challenge was a big success!
Although now that I think about it, I could have had one more highball.
But I’m totally satisfied.
The 99-yen highballs are available for a limited time, but even without that deal, this place offers great value.
