Our previous “3,000-yen izakaya drinking” challenge was well received.
This time, we once again headed to a place near Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Station.
The restaurant this time is “つくねや 西宮北口店.”
Apparently, draft beer is just 280 yen, so it seems like you should be able to drink quite a bit for 3,000 yen.
Let’s give it a try!!

Challenge Start!

We’ll start with this right away.
Draft beer: 280 yen.
It tastes great when you’re thirsty.

This is the system for ordering food.

Here are the appetizer and cabbage.
These are free.

I ended up finishing my beer while eating the appetizer, so here’s my second glass.

Since this is a yakitori restaurant, I ordered some skewers.
First up is “shiitake” (160 yen).
It’s 160 yen per skewer, but one serving is normally three skewers, so one serving is actually 480 yen. Keep that in mind.
I didn’t know one serving meant three skewers when I ordered, but they kindly grilled just one of each for me.
Much appreciated, really……

This is “tomato” (120 yen).
Grilled tomatoes are delicious, aren’t they?
They’re really hot, so be careful not to burn yourself.

And now I’m on to my third draft beer.

This is “zuri ninniku” (gizzard with garlic) (180 yen).

This is “sasami (ume)” (chicken tenderloin with plum) (180 yen).

This is “butatan (negi)” (pork tongue with green onion) (160 yen).
Wow, the beer just keeps going down.

So, here’s my fourth draft beer.

Since I’m at “つくねや,” I ordered the “つくねや特製つくね(スープ付き)” (Tsukuneya special tsukune, with soup) (520 yen).
It’s a unique kind of tsukune that feels a bit like Akashiyaki.
It comes with a special chicken paitan soup, so dipping it in the soup is also a good way to eat it.
At this point, I checked the bill once.
So far, it was apparently just under 2,800 yen.
Looks like I can fit in one more item.

So, to finish things off, I ordered an “onigiri (ume)” (rice ball with plum) (200 yen).
The rice was cooked nicely too.
That was satisfying.
In total, I had four draft beers, grilled shiitake, tomato, zuri ninniku, sasami (ume), butatan (negi), plus Tsukuneya’s special tsukune and an onigiri.
Now then, what did the bill come to……
My heart was pounding……
Ta-da!!
It was “3,080 yen”!!!
Whoa, I went overrrrr…
It’s pretty hard to aim right up against the 3,000-yen limit……
Looks like ordering that final onigiri was a miscalculation (the tax calculation……).
I won’t let this stop me, though. I’ll take on the challenge again.
Charcoal-Grilled Yakitori “つくねや 西宮北口店” Menu

Here’s the menu (some parts are a little hard to see because of the light, sorry).
More than anything, it’s great that beer and chuhai are 280 yen.
Charcoal-Grilled Yakitori “つくねや 西宮北口店” Exterior
Actually, there are two “つくねや” locations in Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi.
The one I first went to was “つくねや 本店.”

The 4th floor of this building is “つくねや 本店.”
But that location was full, so the staff kindly guided me to the nearby “つくねや 西宮北口店.”
What a thoughtful place.

This building is where “つくねや 西宮北口店” is located.

Here’s the entrance.
