Katsukura, a tonkatsu specialty restaurant with its main shop in Kyoto Sanjo, also has a location inside Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens.
This restaurant is particular about everything, from the meat, of course, to the breadcrumbs, frying oil, sauce, cabbage, and dressing.
They now have locations across Japan, but in Hyogo Prefecture, they are only in Mint Kobe and Gardens.
So I headed straight to Gardens and tried their carefully made tonkatsu.

Nadai Tonkatsu “Katsukura Hankyu Nishinomiya Gardens” Food
When I’m unsure what to order, I usually go with the dish the restaurant recommends.
So this time I chose the “Obanzai and Hire Katsu Set Meal (120 grams)” (2,080 yen).

First, this sesame was brought to the table.
You grind the sesame while waiting for the food to arrive.

The sesame is ground.
Now you add the tonkatsu sauce here.

These three kinds of condiments are on the table.
The “yuzu dressing” is for the cabbage, so you add either the “tonkatsu sauce” or the “rich sauce” to the sesame from earlier.
This time, I went with the “tonkatsu sauce.”

It looks like this.
Now, it seems the food has arrived.

This is the “Obanzai and Hire Katsu Set Meal.”
It’s already quite a generous portion, but apparently rice, miso soup, and cabbage all come with free refills.

For some reason, I personally have this fixed idea that “tonkatsu goes with grated yam,” so I added “grated yam made with nagaimo from Aomori Prefecture” (380 yen).

The rice is “barley rice.”
Apparently it’s 20% barley.
You can get refills too.

This is the miso soup.
It’s Kyoto-style, but both the dashi and miso had a rich flavor, and it was delicious.
The miso soup is refillable as well.

You eat the cabbage with the “yuzu dressing” from earlier.
The dressing is oil-free, so it feels healthy.
This is refillable too.

This is “eggplant with thickened sauce.”
It has ginkgo nuts and shimeji mushrooms, giving it an autumn feel.
As expected from a Kyoto restaurant.
The obanzai dishes seem to vary depending on the location and season, so please ask the restaurant for details.

This is “shira-ae.”
Shimeji mushrooms, spinach, carrots, konjac, and other ingredients are dressed with tofu.
It’s a classic Japanese dish, and of course it was delicious.

This is “sesame tofu.”
This really is Kyoto cuisine, isn’t it?
It had a rich sesame aroma, and this was also very tasty.

This is “tamagoyaki.”
Honestly, I couldn’t really tell whether it was dashimaki or not.
The flavor was solid and it was good, but it wasn’t as soft as dashimaki, and while I was wondering about it, I ended up finishing it……
Still, every dish really gives you a sense of Kyoto-style cooking.

Now for the star of the meal: the “hire katsu.”
The “tonkatsu sauce” from earlier is quite sweet.
If you prefer something sharper, I think the “rich sauce” would be better.
The coating was crisp and the inside was moist, making it a dish that really showed why this is a tonkatsu specialty restaurant.
Pork fillet can often turn out dry, but of course that wasn’t the case here.

Since rice refills are free, I had the first bowl as-is, then poured the grated yam over the second bowl.
I got refills of both cabbage and rice, so I may have eaten a bit too much……
And since I was already overeating, I ended up ordering this too↓

It’s “yuzu sherbet” (100 yen).
It’s usually 200 yen, but during lunch only, you can have it for 100 yen.

When you open it, it looks like this.
It has a rich yuzu aroma, but the flavor is lemony and not too sweet.
It’s the perfect sherbet after a meal. It really feels well thought out.
I was completely full too (free refills make a big difference), and I was very satisfied.
Why not give it a try sometime?
You can enjoy the feeling of being in Kyoto while still in Nishinomiya.

This is the lunch menu.
Besides tonkatsu, there are various kinds of katsu, including shrimp katsu, cream croquettes, chicken katsu, and minced meat katsu.
For the tonkatsu, you can also choose between loin and fillet.

All seating inside is table seating.

It looks like this.
There are also larger tables that feel a bit like counter seating.

Here they are.
If you’re dining alone, I think these seats would be easy to use.
Since it’s a Kyoto restaurant, the interior has character and a calm atmosphere.

It’s on the 4th floor of Gardens.

This is the restaurant exterior.

A closer look at the display window looks like this.
It seems they have plenty of lunch menu options too.
